Runbook Readiness and Handover

Last updated on

Runbooks from Design are often technically solid but not yet operationally complete for high-volume factory delivery. This page defines how to convert them into run-safe, auditable runbooks.

Operational completeness

Every step has owner, prerequisite, expected output, and evidence requirement.

Control points

Explicit entry/exit criteria, hold points, and mandatory sign-off checkpoints.

Rollback safety

Trigger conditions, decision authority, fallback sequence, and communication playbook.

Handover quality

Consumable package for wave teams: dependencies, assumptions, known risks, and exceptions.

  • Gate 1 - Technical readiness: Architecture and platform prerequisites validated.
  • Gate 2 - Operational readiness: Roles, shifts, and escalation routes confirmed.
  • Gate 3 - Business readiness: Cutover windows and customer communications approved.
  • Gate 4 - Recovery readiness: Rollback and hibernate/reactivation steps verified.
  1. Baseline runbook from Design and identify unresolved operational assumptions.
  2. Add checkpoint evidence requirements and assign accountable approvers.
  3. Integrate cutover, hibernate, and rollback sequence with exact trigger logic.
  4. Perform tabletop walkthrough with partner factory and customer operations.
  5. Run rehearsal (or pilot wave) and update runbook from observed variances.
  6. Sign off final handover package for wave-scale operations.
  • Approved runbook with versioned change history.
  • Dependency and interface map for the target wave.
  • Escalation and communication matrix.
  • Validation checklist and evidence index.
  • Rollback and hibernate/reactivation procedure sheet.

Service Management and Operations defines the steady-state support, service-target, and operational ownership model that receives a workload after wave handover.

From Design Draft to Factory-Ready Runbook

Section titled “From Design Draft to Factory-Ready Runbook”

A Design runbook typically documents the target sequence and rollback intent for one representative workload of an R-strategy. Factory Setup turns that single-workload runbook into a repeatable, wave-scale operating document: it adds explicit evidence checkpoints, assigns approvers by role rather than by name, and generalizes environment-specific steps into parameterized instructions that any wave squad can execute consistently across many similar workloads.
