Establishing a fully managed, central control plane is crucial for maintaining self-service, landing zone orchestration, automated compliance, and FinOps across your STACKIT organization.

Supported IDP solutions

  • Crossplane: Open source control plane for cloud-native infrastructure. Provision and manage landing zones as Kubernetes-native resources with composition-based policy enforcement, supporting STACKIT through custom providers.
  • Backstage: Open source developer portal by Spotify. Provides a self-service catalog for developer platforms, enabling teams to discover, create, and manage infrastructure templates and services on STACKIT.

Integration workflow

  1. Evaluate whether your organization needs infrastructure-as-code orchestration (Crossplane) or a developer-facing self-service portal (Backstage) — or both, as they complement each other.

  2. Deploy the chosen IDP control plane within your primary STACKIT administrative project.

  3. Configure the IDP to orchestrate landing zones and apply organizational policies to all newly generated STACKIT environments.
